Hernan Cortes sailed from Cozumel through Tabasco and into the West to conquer the Aztecs. Only then were the sights primarily set on the Maya.

The multitude of tribes in the Yucatan, our tribes, and others were under the unity of the Maya in several locations, the nearest for our story being Chichen-Itza.

Constant fighting between our tribes will either lead to a unification together against the Spanish or an all out collapse which leads to the Maya being defeated, although they weren't truly defeated until 1687 when the last capital fell.

The Spanish learned of the whereabouts of the Maya when they spotted a Witoto trading canoe off the coast of Honduras, following them to the peninsula itself.

The Witoto Tribe had decimated the Spanish when they arrived on the shores in 1516, prompting their immediate retreat which brought them back with even more troops. Carrying unknown diseases, weapons of iron and cannons while the natives fought with wood, flint and obsidian.
